Wingate University Degree

DEGREE

Expanding our Wayfind program to more Union County Public Schools means more opportunities for students to get a Wingate University degree!

Thanks for the coverage WCNC Charlotte: https://lnkd.in/erJ5y3Ra

More information:

Wingate University and Union County Public Schools (UCPS) are expanding the Wayfind Program to offer more students an opportunity to attend college. Beginning in January 2024, eighth-grade students from Sun Valley Middle and Porter Ridge Middle will be eligible to apply to Wayfind. These students will then continue to participate in Wayfind at Sun Valley High and Porter Ridge High in the 2024-2025 school year. The program is currently at East Union Middle, Monroe Middle, Forest Hills High and Monroe High. Students who complete the program are eligible to receive a full-tuition scholarship to Wingate University.

Launched in 2019, this free college-access program pairs middle and high school students with mentors from Wingate University to prepare them for college. Mentors and students create a roadmap for college planning, work on SAT and ACT preparation exercises, and participate in college visits and summer enrichment activities.

The Wayfind Program started with eighth-grade students at East Union Middle and Monroe Middle. As these students moved to Forest Hills High and Monroe High, the mentors and students formed meaningful relationships that led to learning about making positive decisions, improving communication skills and self-empowerment.

“Wayfind is a gamechanger for many families and this partnership with Wingate University is allowing us to remove barriers for students who want to attend college,” said Dr. Andrew Houlihan, UCPS superintendent. “Wayfind has been successful for five years and now we can offer more students an opportunity to get the resources they need to thrive in high school and college.”

The first cohort of Wayfind scholars graduated from UCPS in June 2023. Six of the 10 students now attend Wingate University and serve as Wayfind mentors.

“The perfect candidate for the free college-access program is a future first-generation college student who finds value in learning outside the classroom, said Wayfind director Dr. Abby Holland. “Wayfind mentors are not tutors. The aim of Wayfind is to help scholars build knowledge in non-academic areas. While spending an hour playing chess or painting with a mentor, scholars strengthen social skills, learn how to plan a project, and practice effective communication.”
